Google accounts are a treasure trove of personal data for identity thieves.
These Google features provide easy ways to monitor your account’s access history, manage the websites that can access your account, and control private information that may be leaking onto the Web.

Monitor Account Activity
Buried at the bottom of your Gmail inbox, you’ll find a Last Account Activity indicator. It’ll tell you when your account was last accessed; click the Details link to see more information.

The details window shows you your account activity at a glance. You’ll find a Recent Activity List here — as I can see from the * indicators and the IP address at the bottom of the window, all account activity is coming from my current IP address.

If there was activity coming from an unusual IP address — perhaps one half way around the world — I’d get an alert because my alert preference is to prompt on unusual account activity. This is the default. If the alert is disabled, you’ll probably want to click Change and set it to alert you.

If there active sessions elsewhere — maybe you forgot to log out on a public computer? — use the Sign Out All Other Sessions button to forcibly close them.

Check Authorized Sites & Apps
Website and apps can ask for permission to access your Google account. If you’ve been trying out various web services and apps, some of them may still have access to your account, even if you no longer use them.

First, open the Account Settings page from anywhere on Google.

On the Account Settings page, click the Edit link next to Authorizing Applications & Sites.

After entering your password, you’ll see the list of sites and apps that have access to your Google account.

Each website or app can have different permissions. Ones with permission to “Sign in using your Google account” can’t do anything more than use your Google account to confirm your identity, while ones with “Full Account Access” have access to your entire account. Many apps are somewhere in between — for example, the Picnik image editor has access to my Picasa Web Albums here. Other apps could have access to your Gmail account.

If you don’t use an app or website anymore, or just don’t like how many permissions it requires, click the Revoke Access link to remove access.

Check the Dashboard
Google’s Dashboard shows you everything Google knows about you. At the bottom of the Account Settings page where you found the Authorizing Applications & Sites link, click the “Visit the previous version of the Google accounts screen” link.

On the following page, click the “View data stored with this account” link.

From here, you can see what you’re sharing with the entire Internet or other Google users. Look for the icon that looks like a group of three people to see what you’re sharing. If you don’t want to share specific data, use the links next to the service to manage your shared data.

You can also remove data you don’t want Google to have. For example, if you’re done using Chrome and don’t want Google to remember your browser data, click the “Stop sync and delete data from Google” link to the right of the Chrome sync service.

If you notice anything amiss, particularly with access to your account from other locations, changing your password is a good idea. Click the Change Password link on your Account Settings page to change it.

If you are using Mozilla’s Thunderbird email client on a desktop computer, you probably have updated to version 12 of the client when the new version came out. Shortly thereafter, Thunderbird was updated to version 12.0.1, which resolved several issues that came to light after the final release of Thunderbird 12.

Some Thunderbird users ever since they have updated to Thunderbird 12 have noticed that the client’s performance dropped considerably. This is for instance the case when affected users open emails in the program, as it may happen that it takes longer than usual to do so. Thunderbird in some instances may even freeze, for a while.

According to Mozilla, the most likely cause for this is antivirus software running on the system. Bugs have been filed by users running NOD32 and Avira Antivir, with the likelihood that other antivirus applications may cause the issues as well.

A workaround has been posted to fix the issue for affected users.

Open the Thunderbird Profile Directory from Help | Troubleshooting Information
Quit Thunderbird
Delete any directories in the Thunderbird Profile Directory ending in “-wal” or “-shm”
Then restart Thunderbird
E.g. delete directories named like the following: “places.sqlite-wal”, “places.sqlite-shm”, “cookies.sqlite-shm”, “cookies.sqlite-wal”

Users need to make sure that they only delete directories, and not files in the Thunderbird profile folder to test the fix. I’d suggest to make a backup of the profile folder – with Thunderbird closed- to avoid any issues that could result from this. MozBackup can do that for instance.

Once you have deleted the folders in the Thunderbird profile directory, restart Thunderbird to see if the issue has been resolved.

According to Mozilla, a patch for the issue is in the making to resolve it on their side of things. You find the full bug report listing here, in case you are interested or want to share your own experience.

Now that half of the world is talking about hosting files in the cloud, I thought it to be a good idea to take a look at what you can actually do with cloud storage space. While you could use it exclusively to host files online, you may be missing out on some of the advanced options that online storage provides. This guide contains suggestions as to what these options may be.

1. Online Backup
This one seems pretty obvious at first. Use the Gigabytes of online storage to backup local files. Depending on the service that you use, you may need to move the files that you want to backup into the service’s root folder on your system. Some cloud storage services, like Cubby for instance, give you more control by allowing you to select the folders that you want to backup online. With others, you need to use tricks to get them to synchronize external folders with the cloud.

Many online storage services save a file’s revision history for a limited amount of time, so that you can access previous versions of files as well, even if you have not created a backup.
2. Your Music in the cloud
If you want part of your music available on multiple devices and PCs, you could think about moving part or even all of your music collection to the cloud. While this may take a while before everything is synchronized, especially if your music collection is in the Gigabyte range, you’d then be able to access your music from the web browser, and from devices that are synced with the account or have access to it.
3. Sharing files
You can use cloud storage to share files. This is not that different from file hosting services that allow you to do the same though, but some services give you better sharing controls and options. Microsoft’s SkyDrive for instance lets you share files directly with other users, either by email, by link, or by posting files to social networking sites such as Facebook or Linkedin. The main difference to many file hosting services is that you can share large files easily this way. Most file hosting services limit the size of files that you can share to a few hundred Megabytes. While there are others that offer more, they are usually faster gone than they appeared on the Internet.
4. Collaboration
Depending on the online storage service that you use, you have different options to collaborate with other users. Dropbox users can for instance share folders, so that anyone can add, delete or edit files independently from each other. SkyDrive and Google Drive add document editing options to that, thanks to Google Docs and SkyDrive’s document editing options.
5. Synchronizing profiles and mailboxes
Some services, like Cubby, make it easy to synchronize browser profiles, or your mailbox, or other data, as you can select any folder on your system for synchronization right away. With other services, like Dropbox for instance, it is not that easy as you are stuck with the root folder and need to get your external folders linked to that folder, to have it synchronized with the cloud and other devices.

You can check out the guide How To Synchronize Google Chrome Data Without Chrome Sync for an idea on how this is done on a system. One option that is discussed in the tutorial is that the folder that you want synchronized is moved inside the root folder of the cloud storage service.

6. Use as External Hard Drives
If you are running low on local disk space, you can use online storage to park some of your files online. With Microsoft’s SkyDrive, users get up to 25 Gigabytes of free online storage space. While that may not look like much when compared to hard drives with Terabytes of space, it may be enough for low end systems or laptops and tablets, which often ship with less storage space. Plus, you can map that storage to a drive letter in your operating system.

7. Access files from third party systems
Sometimes you may not have one of your computers with you, but need to access some of your files. The majority of file storage services provide access to synchronized files via web interfaces. SkyDrive users can even access all of the files on connected PCs, if the feature is enabled, and the PCs are online when the files need to be accessed.

Step 2. After the login you are on your Dropbox account page, here you can see all your files and folders that are in your Dropbox account. Now to take the backup of your full account, hit Ctrl+A to highlight all your files and folders. Now you can see the Download button on your Dropbox account, see the screenshot below.

Cubby launched around the same time, offering five Gigabytes of online space, and options to synchronize any local folder with that space without having to resort to tricks to do just that.

And then there was Google Drive, offering five Gigabytes of free storage as well, and desktop apps for both Windows and Mac.

We ran a cloud storage price comparison back then and came to the conclusion that Microsoft offered the most storage for the buck up to 100 Gigabytes of storage. Amazon surprisingly tied Microsoft for first place in the 20 Gigabyte extra space field, beating Google in the process.

And it is Amazon that just released a cloud drive desktop app for Windows and Mac. Download Here.

what Amazon Cloud Drive is offering:
Upload files to the cloud, either by dragging and dropping files on the Cloud Drive icon, or by right-clicking files or folders and selecting the send to Amazon Cloud Drive context menu option.
Downloading of files via the web browser
Background transfers

One of the biggest differences between Amazon’s Cloud Drive app, and the SkyDrive, Google Drive, Cubby or Dropbox application is the missing sync feature. The app is not creating a folder on your system that gets synchronized automatically with the cloud, and this also means that you can’t access or download your apps from your desktop.

Amazon Cloud Drive for the desktop is therefor no app for users who want to use a file synchronization feature. Users who just need to move local files to the cloud regularly, may still find Amazon’s Cloud Drive to be suitable for that purpose.

The program itself is automatically minimized in the system tray, from where you can load the Amazon Cloud Drive account in the default web browser or buy additional storage should you run out of it.
Closing Words

Amazon’s Cloud Drive desktop app is excellent for users who want to upload files to the cloud from local PCs or Macs. The software’s biggest disadvantages are the lack of a synchronization option, and that all downloads are handled via the service’s web site and not locally.

Google Docs was updated Wednesday with more than 450 fonts, which are immediately for use. These new fonts are the same as the ones featured on Google’s Web Fonts site for web designers.

Of course, having close to 500 fonts in a long drop-down menu would be quite intimidating, and thankfully that is not what will greet users who wish to check out the new offerings. Instead, you’ll be able to peruse a list of the new fonts in a separate window, and add the ones you like to the standard font list in the Document editor. The process is not much more involved than that, and full instructions can be found in the Google Docs Blog post.

In addition to the new fonts, Google Docs was updated with several new handy features.

A few more options for inserting images in Docs, including inserting from Google Drive (which finally launched last month), searching for images from the LIFE Photo archive, or taking a snapshot with your webcam
Charts in spreadsheets now has support for minor gridlines and options to customize the formats of axis labels
Better support for screenreaders in presentations and the addition of NVDA to the list of supported screenreaders
Option to set the default page size for new documents by selecting File > Page setup
Automatically show bidirectional controls when typing in a language that might use them
Many Apps Script improvements

For full notes and other additional details regarding this update, check out the blog post.
